| May 68 in France shifted society towards more liberal moral ideals. March 68 in Rodrigues lead to being cast aside to face endemic poverty issues of ‘quart-monde’. Both events had enormous social impact, but unlike France, that was the last mass protest tranquil Rodrigues has ever known for the past 41 years, when independence from the UK was emphatically forced upon the local inhabitants. British warships were brought in, pointing threateningly guns on the tiny island; quashing all attempts to civilian protest by the overwhelming show of military might... This coming Saturday sleepy Rodrigues will finally wake up to the call of basic human rights nonpolitical protest march, in this uncertain dog-eat-dog economic world following global financial meltdown. An all-out civilian upheaval that can easily topple over, cannot be ignored or fall on deaf ears. As a matter of urgency GM needs to address Rodrigues socio-economic issues now. |
